I've been writing about a client I work with called Quicklyft and how I've been running ads for them. The last update that I sent out was about the creatives that were used; the ugly one and the well designed one (you can find it here).

This update is to talk about the benchmarks that were set, the performance goals that we had in mind and how well (or not well). Let's dive into it.

Benchmarks we set:

According to Google, the average cost of a lead in their industry is around $5-20 depending on a lot of different things and since they have never ran ads for the business before, the benchmark wasn’t really a fixed number but they were basically aiming to get anything less than $20 per lead.

How did we do

The results are in!

We are going to take a look at the different types of ads that were ran, how they performed and then used that to decide whether or not it was a good ad or not and why.

The well designed ads:

These ads performed realllllllllyyyyy bad. As you can see from the stats below, they were CTR was bad, CPM was not the best and other metrics in there were nothing to write home about. (Click on the image to see clearly)

The reason this is the case is because people do not like being sold to, so when you have an ad that is very obvious, it is bound to fail. Now this is not the case for every industry but for this specific industry and offer, it was. We did not get a single conversion from these ads.

The “ugly“ ads:

These ads performed a lot better. The CPMs were manageable and in line with the benchmarks that were set. The only issue with this ad was the quality of the leads that we were getting and that’s not because of the ad itself but because of the qualification process that people were going through before putting in their information.

I think we could get better performance from this ad but this will do for now. Now we know what to do and what not to do.
